THE OFFICIAL NEW ZEALAND ROAD CODE 2023

The Official New Zealand Road Code has been designed to help you become a safe and responsible driver.

The licence and study guide section will help you through each stage of your driver licence. It explains the driver licensing system in New Zealand, describes each stage of your driver licence and provides useful information about the theory and practical tests. You can also view most of the questions that you could be asked when you sit the theory test for your learner licence, and a driving skills syllabus to help you and your driving coach when you’re learning to drive.

The road code section is a user-friendly guide to New Zealand’s traffic law and safe driving practices. You will be tested on this information in your theory and practical driving tests. It explains the legal responsibilities of vehicle owners and the legal requirements for your vehicle. It also contains information about what you can do to be safer on the road when you’re a pedestrian, cyclist, horse rider or moped rider.

This guide is intended for drivers of cars and other light vehicles. Waka Kotahi also publish road codes for heavy vehicle drivers and motorcyclists.

The 2023 version of The Official New Zealand Road Code was published in November 2022. Sometimes new legislation may cause smaller changes in the Road Code; these updates can be found on the NZTA website.
